Nichole Michaels

Nichole Michaels, PhD, MPH, is a Principal Investigator in the Center for Injury Research and Policy at the Abigail Wexner Research Institute at Nationwide Children’s Hospital and Assistant Professor of Pediatrics and Public Health at The Ohio State University. Dr. Michaels’ research interests center on preventing morbidity and mortality from drug overdoses, child maltreatment, firearm injuries, and other violent means. She is particularly interested in how these issues intersect and how the criminal legal system can both promote and hinder positive outcomes for individuals and families. Her lab values collaboration with community members and is dedicated to promoting equity and social justice through the work they do with marginalized and often stigmatized populations. As a mixed methods researcher, Dr. Michaels strives to center the voices of the communities she works with and put a story behind the epidemiological data that frame her lab’s mission. She is also proud to lead a lab that provides a welcoming and supportive environment for individuals from groups that are underrepresented in research (eg, first-generation students, racial and ethnic minorities, LGBTQ+ people, immigrants to the US, individuals with disabilities).
