Fetal, Infant, and Child Death Review: A Public Health Approach to Reducing Mortality and Morbidity

A special supplement of Pediatrics, focused on child death review (CDR) and fetal and infant mortality review (FIMR) data, was published on November 1st, 2024. This supplement features 17 articles highlighting the unique findings from CDR and FIMR teams across the country.
The supplement is open-access and available online. A brief video abstract highlighting the research is available at https://vimeo.com/1025141230.
Highlights from the supplement include:
-
More than 80% of reported fatalities among sexual and gender-diverse youth resulted from suicide. Social and environmental factors surrounding these deaths can be positively impacted by informed and affirming healthcare providers.
-
Child maltreatment and substance use are common factors surrounding overdose deaths. Families with children of all ages would benefit from interventions focused on opioid prescribing, storage, disposal, and misuse.
-
Comprehensive partnerships, with consistent messaging, reduced sleep-related deaths in a major city.
