Funding Updates from the Hill
President Donald Trump’s Office of Management and Budget (OMB) recently ordered an expansive freeze of “all federal financial assistance,” which halts payments for all federal grants and loan disbursements. This temporary freeze in federal spending will have a negative impact on countless state and local public health programs, and research initiatives, including those administered through the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) National Center for Injury Prevention and Control (NCIPC).
U.S. District Judge Loren Ali Khan halted the freeze, just minutes before order was slated to take effect. As a result of Judge Ali Khan’s ruling, the White House recently decided to rescind the order from OMB.
While the White House moves to roll back its sweeping freeze of federal assistance, which caused widespread confusion, it is clear that the new administration has a strong interest in the close examination of federal public health programs. SAVIR, Safe States, and our various partners in the injury and violence prevention arena will continue to monitor and respond to any effort aimed at rescinding funds appropriated by Congress for federal injury and violence prevention programs.
As it is now more important than ever to educate policymakers about the value of injury and violence prevention programs, please consider participating in the Safe States Alliance and the Injury and Violence Prevention Network Advocacy Day on March 20th.
