Introducing the Save a Life Colorado Naloxone Access Map and Toolkit
The University of Colorado Anschutz Injury and Violence Prevention Center (IVPC) is pleased to announce the launch of the Save a Life Colorado Naloxone Access Map, an interactive map that helps Coloradans find places to get naloxone across the state.
Why They Built It
As the IVPC developed the map, they found that existing resources often left gaps. Some offered incomplete geographic coverage, while others focused on only one type of naloxone distribution site. To build a more complete picture of naloxone availability, they took a multi-step approach that combined:
- Reviews of existing resources
- Internet-based searches
- Outreach to local and regional organizations
- Collaboration with existing statewide resources
A Free Toolkit for Other Communities
Other states and organizations may want to take on similar work, so they created the Save a Life Map Toolkit, a free resource that documents their process, lessons learned, and recommendations for building interactive maps like this one.
The toolkit includes guidance on:
- Identifying naloxone distribution sites
- Engaging local and regional partners
- Collecting and validating location data
- Maintaining and updating map information
- Launching a public-facing resource
Explore and Adapt
We hope these resources support efforts to improve naloxone access and overdose prevention in communities across the country. Whether you work in an injury prevention center, health department, academic institution, public health agency, or community coalition, we encourage you to adapt and build on this work to meet local needs.
The Save a Life Colorado Naloxone Access Map was developed with support from the CDC and the Anschutz Foundation.
