SAVIR Student Spotlight: Genevieve Barlow, BAH

Genevieve Barlow, BAH, MA Student in Clinical Child & Adolescent Psychology, University of Guelph, Department of Psychology
What are your injury and violence prevention research interests?
My injury and violence prevention research interests center on pediatric injury prevention, particularly unintentional injuries in children and youth. I am passionate about exploring strategies to enhance safety in everyday environments, including pedestrian safety, traffic-related injuries, kitchen safety, and home safety. My work aims to identify risk factors and develop evidence-based interventions to reduce injury rates and create safer spaces for children and adolescents.
What is something you enjoy about participating in a SAVIR committee as a student?
As a new member of the SAVIR SECP committee and as a 1st year MA student, I am very grateful for the opportunity to connect with other students and professionals in the injury prevention field to learn from their expertise, and about ongoing initiatives and research. I’ve enjoyed the chance to network and gain a broader understanding of the field through committee activities. I’m looking forward to continuing to build connections, grow as a researcher, and contribute to the work that SAVIR committees lead!
What motivates you every day?
I’m motivated every day by contributing to the well-being of children and youth, particularly through efforts to reduce unintentional injuries. These injuries are one of the leading causes of death among youth, yet many are preventable. Knowing that my work can play a role in fostering safer environments keeps me inspired and focused.
What do you like to do in your free time?
In my free time I love to do all kinds of crafting, tending to my plant collection, and going on outdoor adventures with my dogs!
