Strengthening the Future of Injury and Violence Prevention: A Year in Review – Ashley Brooks-Russell, SAVIR Board President

As we close out another year between our annual conference, I’m grateful to have the opportunity to reflect on accomplishments. Despite the many challenges to our research, especially recently, we share a commitment to injury and violence prevention research and that commitment ensures that our efforts will continue. Thanks to the many volunteer members who serve on committees, and small but resourceful staff, SAVIR has made tremendous strides.
One of the biggest milestones this year was the launch of our new strategic plan, which will guide our priorities and actions in the years ahead. One of our primary goals is for SAVIR to continue to be the leading scientific organization dedicated to advancing the science of injury and violence prevention. Another one of our goals is to advance science, and that includes advocating for funding and evidence-based policy and program solutions. I had the opportunity to join a day of coordinated visits to members of Congress and senators, in partnership with Safe States. This was a rewarding experience, and one I encourage all our members to join next year. It has changed how I think about the impact of our research and how we communicate its impact, particularly to lawmakers.
In the past year we also unveiled a new website and membership system, making it easier than ever for members to connect, collaborate, and access valuable resources. This upgrade reflects our commitment to fostering a network of researchers and improving the ways we serve our members.
Looking ahead, our upcoming conference promises record-breaking attendance, with the highest number of abstract submissions in SAVIR history. This highlights the strength of our field and growth, especially in the last several years. One of the reasons I most enjoy the SAVIR conference is because it is an opportunity to reflect on how incremental steps over weeks and months lead to significant achievements. Learning from colleagues, and seeing their successes, encourages me to keep working on the challenges I’m facing in my own research.
None of these achievements would have been possible without the dedication of our members. I want to take this opportunity to extend a thank you to our outgoing board members and committee chairs. SAVIR depends on the service of our members, and these hours of service the organization are essential and valued.
As we look ahead to the coming year, we are excited about the opportunities before us and the continued momentum we have built together. With your ongoing support, we know that SAVIR will continue to thrive and advance our shared mission of promoting high-quality research in violence and injury prevention and to translate and disseminate research findings. Thank you for being a part of this incredible community.
