Student Spotlight: Mike Henson-Garcia, MPH PhD(c)

Mike Henson-Garcia, PhD Candidate, Department of Health Promotion and Behavioral Sciences, University of Texas Health Houston Science Center – School of Public Health
What are your injury and violence prevention research interests?
Overall, my research agenda centers on protecting adolescents and young adults from two pervasive public health threats: firearm-related injury and dating violence. For the past four years, I have worked as a research assistant to assist in the design and evaluation of the “Me & You – Tech” intervention: an innovative, technology-based program, tailored for middle school students, aiming to prevent adolescent dating violence by fostering healthy relationship skills. In addition, my dissertation work explores effective strategies for promoting secure firearm storage in the homes of youth living in the United States. My research takes an audience-centered approach to guide the development of family-based firearm injury prevention initiatives.
What is something you enjoy about participating in a SAVIR committee as a student?
My favorite aspect of participating in SAVIR as a student is the opportunity to connect with peers from across the country who share my passions and motivations. I am the only student in my department who is focused on firearm injury prevention so my involvement with SAVIR has truly allowed me to connect and build relationships with others engaged in the field.
What motivates you every day?
During high school, I lost two very important people to firearm-related injuries: my best friend and my uncle. These events profoundly changed my life and continue to drive the work I do today. My five nieces also serve as a constant inspiration for my pursuit of higher education.
What do you like to do in your free time?
In my free time, I like to explore different coffee shops and bookstores. I also really enjoy going to music festivals, traveling to new cities, and cooking!
