Join SAVIR for a week of virtual programming, September 15–22! This mini-SAVIR conference offers daily opportunities to participate in science sessions, skill-building labs, and networking events. Monday, Sept 15

Methods Spotlight: Engaging with Communities Facing Structural Barriers

Injury and violence prevention research strives to engage communities, specifically those disproportionately bearing burdens for negative health and injury outcomes. Join this SAVIR Methods Session to hear how colleagues are moving beyond myths and engaging highly impacted communities, such as unhoused, LGBTQAI+, and Black male youths in research.

The translation of research findings to public audiences is vital for ensuring that both policy and programming are evidence-based. In this session, which features the perspectives of both an expert providing comment and a communications director coordinating and overseeing interviews, we discuss considerations for how to actively translate academic research to more public audiences, including policymakers and practitioners, by and through the media.

Brown Bag: Exploring Careers in Teaching & Research Beyond the Academy

Injury and violence prevention research careers can take many shapes inside and outside of academia. Join this Brown Bag discussion with colleagues to learn more about opportunities outside of traditional academic research lines, such as research careers in non-profits and at liberal arts schools.

From Pavement to Policy: Designing Streets for Safety, Equity, and Engagement (cohosted with Parachute)

SAVIR and Parachute, Canada’s national charity dedicated to injury prevention, are co-hosting a virtual Ask the Experts: Pedestrian Safety discussion. Moderators Valerie Smith, Director of Programs at Parachute and Dr. Elizabeth O’Neal, Assistant Professor, Department of Community and Behavioral Health, University of Iowa and SAVIR Board Director, will bring together experts across borders and disciplines. They’ll cover factors and behaviours, engineering, citizen and community engagement, and policy to consider when designing and implementing solutions to create safe environments.
