Honoring Excellence in Injury and Violence Prevention
The Society for the Advancement of Violence and Injury Research (SAVIR) is pleased to issue the 2026 call for nominations to the SAVIR Fellows Program. The Fellows Program recognizes members who have made substantial, sustained contributions to injury and violence prevention (IVP) research and to SAVIR. This designation celebrates significant scholarship service, and leadership in the field.
What’s new this cycle: We have refreshed this call to be more transparent about how nominations are evaluated and to invite nominators to address each review criterion directly. The criteria below are the same criteria the Awards & Nominations Committee uses to score nominations.
Eligibility
- At least 5 years of active SAVIR membership (years as a student count toward this requirement).
- Substantial contributions to the field of injury and violence prevention.
- Active involvement in SAVIR activities.
Benefits and Responsibilities
Benefits
- Recognition at the SAVIR Annual Conference.

Review Criteria
The Awards & Nominations Committee scores each nomination on two domains, each worth up to 50 points, for a maximum total of 100. The benchmarks listed below are illustrative of the level of accomplishment the Committee looks for. They are guidance, not strict cutoffs — nominees with non‐traditional career paths or different but comparable contributions are encouraged to apply, and nominators are encouraged to make the case in the structured statement (see Application Requirements).
| Domain | What we look for (illustrative benchmarks) | Points |
|---|---|---|
| Significant Contributions to IVP | Author or co‐author of a substantial body of peer‐reviewed publications (the Committee typically uses ~75+ for senior contributors). Service as PI or Co‐PI on federally funded grants (the Committee typically uses ~4+ federal awards as a or equivalent). Significant teaching and mentorship of trainees and early‐career researchers. Significant service to the field beyond SAVIR (similar societies, federal injury grant review panels, journal editorships, etc.). Demonstrable contributions to IVP knowledge through research, scholarship, or translation to practice or policy. | 0–50 |
| Service to SAVIR | Active involvement on the SAVIR Board, committees, working groups, or similar bodies (typically ≥1 year). Oral or poster presentations at multiple SAVIR conferences (typically ≥3). Other service to SAVIR — for example, abstract reviewer, session moderator, mentor in a SAVIR mentoring program, conference organizing roles. | 0–50 |
| Total | Sum of the two domain scores. | 0–100 |
Note on eligibility: Active SAVIR membership of at least 5 years is verified separately and is not part of the 100‐point score.
Application Requirements
To make the review process as fair and consistent as possible, the 2026 nomination packet uses a structured statement organized around the review criteria. Please submit the following materials through the Nomination Portal:
- Nominee CV or résumé. Current and complete.
- Years of involvement in injury and violence prevention. A single line indicating approximate year of entry to the field and years of SAVIR membership.
- Structured Nomination Statement (required). A single document, no more than 2 pages (12‐point font, 1‐inch margins), addressing the sections outlined below.
- Up to two optional letters of support. From SAVIR members or external colleagues who can speak to the nominee’s contributions.
Nomination Statement
Please use the following to guide the nomination statement.
1. Significant Contributions to Injury and Violence Prevention. Describe the nominee’s contributions across the elements listed in the Review Criteria table (publications, federally funded research, teaching/mentorship, service to the field, and translation of research to practice or policy). Use concrete examples and quantitative detail where possible. If the nominee’s career path is non‐traditional or their contributions take a different form than the illustrative benchmarks, please make that case explicitly.
2. Service to SAVIR. Describe the nominee’s service to SAVIR specifically: board, committee, or working‐group roles; SAVIR conference presentations; abstract or grant reviews for SAVIR; mentoring through SAVIR; conference planning; and other service contributions. Please include approximate dates.
3. Statement of Continuing Engagement. A short statement of how the nominee will continue to contribute to SAVIR and the field as a Fellow (mentorship, advocacy, leadership, etc.).
Tip for nominators: Reviewers score each domain against the criteria in the table above. Statements that map clearly onto those criteria — with specifics — tend to score higher than narrative letters that leave reviewers to infer how the nominee meets each element.
