The New Jersey Gun Violence Research Center (GVRC) will be hiring up to three postdoctoral fellows, with these positions beginning in Summer 2026.  The GVRC conducts and funds research on both interpersonal and self-directed gun violence, leveraging both qualitative and quantitative methodology.

Applicants with a PhD in any field relevant to gun violence prevention are encouraged to apply and applications from individuals with minimal experience within but intent to pursue gun violence prevention research will be given due consideration.

Although these positions are not necessarily intended to be designated towards working on one specific project, the GVRC has multiple externally funded projects and broader aims that will be active during the coming fiscal year and which could benefit from contributions from postdoctoral fellows.  These include:

  • A project funded by the Henry Jackson Foundation aimed at rolling Project Safe Guard – a GVRC-designed lethal means counseling intervention – across the entire National Guard.  Within this project, GVRC team members will travel to military installations across the country and help train Guardsmen directly, as well as train trainers in an effort towards developing a sustainable implementation infrastructure. The GVRC will be primarily responsible for the quantitative evaluation of the trainings.
  • A project funded by the Stoneleigh Foundation in collaboration with the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia to study the impacts of gun violence exposure on suicide risk among children in Philadelphia. Team members will assist with quantitative clinical data analysis and conducting interviews in Philadelphia with children.
  • Continued development and maintenance of collaborative research projects with community partners across the state.

GVRC postdocs are able to apply for internal grant funding, contribute to and analyze annually collected nationally representative survey data, and receive training on science communication and the development of community partnerships.  All postdoctoral fellows receive support for conference travel.

Applications will be considered on a rolling basis starting December 1, 2025, and evaluations will continue until the positions are filled.

To apply for the position, please see the Rutgers HR posting (https://jobs.rutgers.edu/postings/262542).  Internal to Rutgers, the position is referred to as Research Associate II; however, the GVRC refers to these positions as postdoctoral fellowships.  The position posting requires that applicants describe at least three years of experience working in a research setting. This information can be described within the CV and/or cover letter.

For any questions related to the positions, please reach out to GVRC Executive Director Michael Anestis (mda141@sph.rutgers.edu) or GVRC Director of Research Daniel Semenza (daniel.semenza@rutgers.edu).
