Despite the significant and persistent burden of injury morbidity and mortality across the US, injury and violence prevention (IVP) work is both underfunded and underutilized in prevention and intervention policy. Elevating evidence-based policies and programs, securing funding for research and programming, and educating lawmakers on injury and violence prevention are often overlooked by researchers and practitioners. Professional organizations, such as Safe States and SAVIR, are positioned to be key organizations to which local, state, and federal agencies and their decision-makers turn to for guidance on the most current research and evidence-based programming and policy solutions. Our professionals need the skills and confidence to provide such guidance. They also have a unique opportunity to engage the next generation in IVP by creating meaningful linkages and opportunities with students. During this interactive learning lab, participants will engage with IVP advocates on strategies to involve students in the work of IVP advocacy and enhance their own skills. Workshop participants will have the opportunity to not just passively learn but actively engage with one another in ideas of how to harness the energy of students in the advocacy process and to practice their own advocacy skills. This is more critical than ever as we enter a difficult appropriations season. Creating strategies to elevate the burden of injuries and violence will be key to keeping communities safe. Following a brief level-setting discussion with experts, participants will get to work on critical advocacy skills.
Injury and Violence Prevention Grand Rounds: Climate Resilience and Community Safety: Injury and Violence Prevention in a Changing World
Date: Thursday, August 22nd at 10amÂ
As climate change accelerates, its impact extends far beyond environmental degradation, influencing societal structures, health outcomes, and patterns of injury and violence. This plenary session seeks to explore the intricate intersections between climate change and the prevention of injury and violence, emphasizing the necessity of an integrated approach to enhance community resilience and safeguard public health.Â
The session will delve into the multifaceted ways in which climate change exacerbates risks and vulnerabilities. Natural disasters such as hurricanes, wildfires, and floods not only cause immediate physical injuries but also disrupt social systems. Rising temperatures and environmental stressors add complexity to our field’s efforts to prevent violence and manage injuries effectively. During this Grand Rounds discussion co-hosted with the Society for the Advancement of Violence and Injury Research, a panel of experts will provide a comprehensive overview of current research and practical strategies that promote climate readiness and resilience, inspiring attendees to action.
